Standings After March 9th Games

1.       Invaders 16 (86/41)

2.      Yeti 12 (70/48)

------------------------------------

3.      Colonials 11 (83/51)

4.      Eagles 8 (56/49)

5.      Bear Claw 4 (60/109)

6.      Venom 4 (61/111)

***Top 2 teams will receive a bye the first week of the playoffs.  The number 3 seed will take on the number 6 seed with the number 4 seed taking on the number 5 seed.  The lower seeds will need to win twice, the higher seed will only need to win once.  For example, if the colonials play the venom, the colonials will move on if they beat the venom in their first game.  If the venom beat the colonials in the first game, they will have to beat them one more time in order to move on.  The top overall seed will play the against the lowest seed team left while the 2nd overall seed will play against the other seed that’s left.***

Invaders 11  Yeti 2

The Invaders clinched the top seed and will await the lowest seeded team remaining when their best of 3 semi final series takes place in 3 weeks from now.   In Reiter’s perspective, Brandon Reiter said that the Yeti was the hottest team in the league right now.   Its safe to say that the Invaders are now the hottest team in the league after picking up their 7th straight win last night.  The Yeti actually started this game much better than their previous meeting with the Invaders but it started getting away from them as the 2nd period went on.  Clint made a lot of good saves in the first period to keep the Invaders in front 1-0 after the 1st period.   The yeti had plenty of good chances to score early but did not get their first goal until around the 10 minute mark of the 2nd period when Dave Jewell scored to close the gap to 2-1.  Brandon Reiter had a couple 2nd period goals including an impressive wrist shot that made its way past Adam to give the Invaders a 2-0 lead.   Andy had the only 1st period goal but he would go on to score 4 more times to lead all scorers.  A 2-1 Invaders lead climbed to 6-1 by the end of the 2nd period.  Aside from Andy and Brandon, Laken had 2 goals including a 2nd period goal to help extend their lead.   Zach Smith only had 1 goal, but it felt like his goal completely swung the game in the Invaders favor.    Smith’s goal came soon after Dave Jewell scored to close the gap to 2-1.  Jason Stamler also had a goal.  Its hard to track all the passing, but the Invaders scored their share of goals from good passing.   Cory did not have any goals but made a lot of good passes.  Matt Jewell had some good chances to score for the Yeti throughout the game and finally delivered late in the game when he cleaned up his Dad’s good shot attempt.  Unfortunately, the damage was done by then.  Clint had another really good showing last night.  Adam was victim of good passing and rebounds but he kept the Yeti within striking distance the first half of the game.  It was only 1-0 after the 1st.  The invaders will finish the regular season against the bear claw next week while the yeti will get a 3rd game against the colonials.  Whoever wins that game will get the other bye.

Eagles 7  Colonials 4

The Colonials may have played their best game when these two teams last met a month or so ago, but they may have played their worse game of the season in last nights rematch.   In terms of standings, this game did nothing for the Eagles, but it sure has to give them a lot of confidence going into the playoffs.  Last nights impressive win for the Eagles also has to put the rest of the league on notice.  For a while, it did not look like this game was going to go in the Eagles favor.   Early in the game, it looked like Denny was going to put the Eagles ahead only for Match to rob Denny and his team of an early lead.  Match played very well early in the game which helped the colonials get off to a 3-1 lead by the 10 minute mark of the 2nd period.  Noah scored the first goal 10 minutes into the game before Eric Llewellyn had a nice backhanded goal off a rebound to even out the 1st period scoring.  The colonials opened the 2nd period on a power play but did not generate much offense from it until the last 15 or 20 seconds. Clay made a nice save on a shot from Phil Mace but Brian got the rebound with less than 10 seconds left on the power play to give the colonials a 2-1 lead.  Jake set Jay Edmiston up for a goal soon after to give the colonials a 3-1 lead.   Clay made a lot of good saves for the Eagles to prevent any further damage.  By the end of the 2nd period, a 3-1 colonials lead turned into a 4-3 deficit.  Eric Llewellyn led all scorers with 3 goals including the eagles 1st two goals and Jerred Amick capitalized on a colonial turnover to put the eagles up 4-3 at the end of 2 periods. Early in the 3rd period, Noah scored on a nice back hander to tie the game at 4.  Clay played another really solid game for the Eagles, but that goal was one he probably would have prevented 9 times out of 10.   The goal did not phase the Eagles as they would go on to score the last 3 goals of the game to give them their 4th win of the season.  Alex Waddell closed out the scoring with around 2 to 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd period.   On top of Llewellyn’s 3 goals, Jerred Amick added 2 goals while Denny added 1 to make up for one that he was robbed of early in the game.  Noah scored twice for the colonials while Jay and Brian each had 1.  Despite the loss, the colonials can still get a bye if they beat the yeti next week.  The Eagles are locked into the 4th seed and will close out the regular season against the Venom next week.  If the season ended now, they would play the bear claw in a 4 vs 5 match up, but there is a chance the venom could move up to 5th depending on how next weeks games pan out.   Regardless of the opponent, the Eagles will only need to win once while the bear claw or venom would need to win twice to move onto the best of 3 semi final series.

Venom 15  Bear Claw 7

When the schedule was first put together in early January, we were anticipating 4 close, entertaining games between these 2 teams.  While its no surprise that the teams split the 4 games, its surprising that none of the 4 games ended up that close.  The closest game came a few weeks ago when the bear claw won 10-4.  The venom won their first match up 16-8 followed by a couple bear claw wins in between (13-6 and 10-4).  Last nights game looked like it could be close but the venom pulled away in the 3rd period.  The Bear Claw led 4-2 after the first period.  Their only regulars, Jaron Buffone and Coltyn Schuckers led the way offensively last night.  Jason Stamler filled in and added a 2nd period goal to draw the bear claw to within a goal at 6-5 but the venom finished strong in the 2nd period and kept the momentum rolling in the 3rd period.  Troy Gaydosh once again led the way in goals but he had plenty of help with Cody Haag getting 3 or 4 nice rebound goals.  Andrew Britton had at least 3 goals as well while Tyler Waltman had a couple goals, including one on a 1st period penalty shot.  Laken filled in for the venom and added a goal as well.  The venom played an inspiring game against the Invaders last week despite getting mercy ruled in the closing seconds of that game.  They carried that effort into last nights game and got good traffic around Bear Claw’s goalie Kaden Coulter along with good passing.  Their passing and traffic made it tough for Kaden to track the ball.  The game got off to a little bit of a late start after Tony Conforto could not get there right away, but he was able to settle into the game after a tough start and help them earn their 2nd win of the season.  Morgan Lyons added a goal late in the game for the venom as well.  Since the two teams split, the tie breaker now goes based on overall goal differential.  As of now, the bear claw are 1 goal ahead going into next week.  The team who ends up with the better goal differential will go up against the Eagles in a 4/5 match up while the other team will go up against either the Colonials or Yeti.   The venom will close out the regular season against the eagles while the bear claw will take on the invaders.

John Matchock (Colonials)

1. 7-4 loss to the eagles last night. What can you say about the overall team effort in the loss? I thought the guys played well. Too bad their goalie didn’t.

2. You robbed Denny of a goal early in the first period. Can you think of another guy in the league that you would like to rob of a goal other than him? I would like to rob anyone at this point.

3. It was your first game of the season goalying against the Eagles. What was your impression of them after last night? They play pretty well together. They seem to know where each other is at

4. Bob and Phil were critical of themselves after the game. What words of encouragement can you give those guys going into the playoffs? It was one game.

5. Yeti are up next week. Winner gets a bye. Do you think a bye will help or would you prefer to play against one of the lower seeds so you don’t have to go a week without playing hockey? I’d rather not have a week off. That’s two weeks without playing

Andrew Britton

1.15-7 win over the bear claw last night. What can you say about the overall team effort in the win? We kept pushing it felt like. Everyone played a role and it was nice to get some flow.

2. Walt had the nice penalty shot goal. Did you have any doubt that he wouldn’t score on that? He was due for a Walt-Whoo

3. What can you say about Troy’s play this season? Troy helps direct everyone which is needed. He has created a lot of chances each game and that’s what we need.

4. None of your games against the bear claw were that close. Which of the 4 games was the most enjoyable against them? This past game was most enjoyable against Bear Claw.

5. You close out the regular season against the Eagles next week. What realistic expectations do you have going up against them next week? Gonna be curious if we can keep the momentum against a top team. Just hoping we can play a respectable game against the Eagles, which I believe can happen.
