Recap of Monday, March 25th

The Mayhem controlled their own destiny for a 3rd place game next week and came through with a hard fought 6-2 win over the Walkers last night.  The Walkers found themselves ahead 2-1 at one point in the 3rd period but the Mayhem rallied for 5 unanswered goals to pick up their 8th win of the season.  They have won with 6 different goalies this season with Mason Britton impressing a lot of spectators last night in only his 2nd game of action since 2019.  He played well filling in for the Hounds last week and played even better in his role with the Mayhem last night.  Derrian normally skates for the Walkers but he found himself in net for them last night with Tony Dodd unable to make it.  He played well despite the loss.  Corey Bassett put the Walkers ahead but the Mayhem rallied (we are trying to find out who had some of the goals for them last night).  We will include that in this recap once we find out.

The Jawas and Hounds found themselves in a meaningless game in terms of the standings last night but they combined for 18 goals including 7 goals in the first period.  The Jawas went up early and stayed ahead throughout.  A 5-2 lead at the end of the first period stretched to a 9-5 lead at the end of 2 periods.  They had a pretty good balance of scoring.  Adam McKinley had at least 3 goals and also assisted on one of the Hounds goals by mistake. One of his goals came on a 3 quarter court shot that found its way into the net.   Jeff Wehner had a nice breakaway goal for the Jawas and also made a good pass to Laken Dodd in front of the net in the 2nd period.  It was a good birthday present for her as she is celebrating her 17th birthday today.  Sage Stefenak filled in for the Hounds last night and scored a 3rd period goal on a nice set up from Garrett Britton.  Mark Chesley had 2 goals to lead the way for the Hounds.  Jaron Buffone and Brenden Chesley each had a goal as well.  Derik Pearce intercepted a pass in the first period and scored an impressive goal for the Jawas.   Pierce contributed some of the Jawas goals.  The Jawas and Walkers will play in a 6 vs 7 matchup next week.  The Hounds were already locked into 8th but weren’t sure who their opponent was going to be.   They will go up against the Colonials at 6:50 p.m. next week.

The Yeti and Colonials played their 2nd one goal game of the season with the Yeti finding a way to win this game in a shootout.  A 1-1 tie after the first period turned into a 4-1 lead for the Yeti midway thru the 2nd period but the Colonials slowly hung around.  Steve Kalgren got the first goal for the Yeti about 9 minutes into the game but Joe Spencer made his presence known in his fill in role for Phil Mace last night by scoring 3 goals for the Colonials.  The first goal came off a faceoff win to tie the game at 1.  The Yeti would go on to score the next 3 goals in the 2nd period before Joe Spencer scored again for the Colonials to cut the deficit to 4-2.  Bob Anderson set Denny Stinchcomb up early in the 3rd period to cut the lead to 4-3 but Zach Smith batted one in front of the net to give the Yeti a 5-3 lead with around 7 minutes to go.  Bob Anderson led the Colonials back by scoring a goal and setting up Joe Spencer for another to help the Colonials force overtime.  To avoid having to win 2 elimination games next week plus a single elimination play in game on April 8th, the Colonials needed to find a way to win in overtime or the shootout to put themselves 3 points ahead of the Eagles, but they were unable to score in the overtime session.  The 6-5 win for the Yeti may have came at a cost as they will now potentially have to play the Eagles in a best of 3 series starting on April 8th unless the Mayhem can upset them in the battle for the 3rd seed next week.

The Eagles closed out the regular season with a 4-3 win over the Knights last night and put themselves in a better position for the playoffs.   The win over the Knights tied them in the standings with the Colonials but they owned the tiebreaker meaning they will get a chance to get the 3rd seed if they beat the Mayhem next week.  Zach Foradori assisted Cody on the first Eagles goal and assisted Eric Llewellyn on the winning goal.  Jerred Amick also scored on a nice shot from the point and Eric Llewellyn scored a goal earlier in the game.  The Knights were playing without Brandon Reiter but at least got an appearance from Cory Schuckers who has only been able to make a few games this season.  Andy Calvert, Jake Kline and Noah each scored for them last night.  If there is such a thing as a good loss, this may have been it.  They already had the first seed clinched and the Eagles could now be on the Yeti’s side if they find a way to beat the Mayhem next week.

Still not too late to sign up for Thursday nights tournament if anyone else is interested.
