Games 1 and 2 had a lot in common last night, including two 9-8 overtime finishes and the now infamous 6-7 score that is sweeping Middle Schools across the country. Both featured family members teams going up against each other as well.
Neither game started out looking like overtime would be needed. In the 6:20 game, Noah Kline's team (Team Black) started the game with the first 2 goals. From there, it was all Jake Kline's team (Team White). His squad rattled off the next 6 goals in the first period. Ben Rossi and Jake Kline each had 2 goals in that stretch with Andy Calvert and John Matchock adding the others. Braxton McKinley stopped the bleeding with a late period goal to make the score 6-3.
The first intermission gave Team Black a chance to regroup and strategize. Whatever discussions took place, they seemed to work. Joe Roush buried a feed from Troy Gaydosh in the opening minutes of the second to get within 2 goals. Rossi added his third goal of the game from Andy to increase the lead back to 3 mid-way through the period before Braxton tallied another goal from Noah to make it 7-5.
Team Black took the lead in the third period scoring the three more with Braxton getting two and Troy Gaydosh getting one. Rossi came through once again for White after scoring on a nice feed from Andy to tie the game back up again, 8-8. Neither team scored in the closing minutes of regulation and Chris Snyder made his best save of the night with 30 seconds left, denying Team Black the chance to win before the buzzer sounded.
Andy finally put an end to the craziness in overtime. Team White improved to 2-0 while Team Black dropped to 1-0-1.
In the 2nd game last night, Vegas Gold picked up another hard fought win to start out the season by defeating Green 9-8 in overtime. It did not appear that overtime would be necessary after the first 15 minutes last night. Cory and Coltyn led the way offensively for Vegas Gold in the first period which saw them go up 5-0. Coltyn scored Vegas’s 2nd goal of the game with Cory adding a couple more in the first period onslaught. Peach did a good job of picking up the garbage by scoring a couple goals on rebounds and Kaden made his share of good saves in the first period. It took a while for Green to score, in fact, their first goal did not come until the game was close to halfway over, but they slowly chipped away at the deficit. Dave Jewell got the scoring started and Brian Anderson scored 3, 2nd period goals to chip away at the deficit. Adam and Braxton skated out for Green (They were missing Jay Edmiston and Matt Jewell). They were mainly used as fill ins so they didn’t have to sit around for an hour before reffing the 820 game. Both provided a spark for green, in particular, Braxton, by adding some speed and a couple goals along the way. Green cut the lead to 1 on some different occasions in the 3rd period but it looked like Vegas Gold would survive the comeback when Bob scored two of his 3 late game goals to put Gold up 8-6 with around 3 minutes to go. Braxton and Dave Jewell (on a nice set up from Tyler Walman) would go on to score the next 2 goals for green and Cody Schaeffer made some good saves in the final minute or so to help green send the game into overtime. The game went back and forth for a couple minutes in overtime before Bob snuck a nice shot past Cody Schaeffer to cap off the 2nd straight overtime game of the night.
Zach Smith and team blue picked up its first win of the season in the finale last night. Jaron Buffone opened up the scoring with a nice shot over Tony’s shoulder to start the game. For anyone who played in the Brockway fall league, its no secret to say that Jaron Buffone is turning into a regular goal scorer. In a highly contested, low scoring playoff game last week, Buffone scored the game winner in overtime. Zach Smith had 2 nice break away goals in this game but the difference this week may have been the addition of Cody Haag. Every team needs a clean up guy and that’s exactly what Haag did throughout this game. He was absent in last week’s close loss to Vegas Gold but he was present for 4 important goals last night. A couple turnovers for Orange proved costly in what turned out to be another competitive game last night. Troy Gaydosh filled in for a missing Alex Waddell and contributed a couple goals in his fill in role. Jason Stamler and Larry added some scoring for orange last night and Tony appeared to settle in a little more this week than last. A couple of blue’s goals came off orange turnovers. Team Blue was missing Anthony Schuckers opening up the door for Tyler Waltman to fill in. If anyone wants to fill in throughout the season, chances are pretty good that we will have openings. Every team is guaranteed 2 playoff games no matter what happens during the regular season, but try to coordinate fill ins with the other team when you can. Sometimes we get into situations when there are surprise no shows with little time to fill out your team for the night. The McKinley’s and Kline’s are willing to ref as many games as possible to help offset some of their league fees. If anyone else wants to ref games, reach out. We will try to distribute the games among refs as much as we can for those who are wanting to cut some of their league fees.

1. You guys fell behind 5-0 after one period tonight but ended up fighting back and forcing overtime. I’m guessing you were pretty happy to make it a good game? Absolutely. After the first period, my realistic hope was playing a better 2nd period and to stay within 5 goals or less going into the 3rd period. I thought we had some good chances in the first period but Kaden made some good saves. We were finally able to get some by him in the 2nd period which gave us some more confidence. Adam and Braxton gave us a spark filling in for us.
2. You had a big hand in the comeback. Do you feel like you’ve fit in well with this team? Its only 2 games, but I feel like we are very capable of scoring, especially if we can get Jay Edmiston to show up. He is a big body in front of the net which we could have used last night when Kaden kept making those saves early in the game. I feel like I could be a good garbage man with some of the scoring chances we are capable of generating.
3. What do you see from the teams across the league so far? Do you think there’s a team to beat? Jake always says he doesn’t draft well, but I feel like he drafted well in this league. If Bubba just plays average, they have a real shot at running away with this league. Their chemistry already looks good. I thought Bubba had an above average game last night and that’s why they were able to beat a good team. We had 3 competitive games last night so that’s always a good thing to see in a draft league.
4. You have recently tried goaltending a few games in Brockway. Do you enjoy the position and could you be making a switch in your later playing years? I do, preferably if I am making most of the routine saves. Giving up bad goals is very deflating to not only the goalie, but the team around you. I wouldn’t mind playing it more if the opportunity presented itself. I just don’t know if I want to spend the money on good equipment.
5. For those who only know Brian Anderson the hockey player, what is something that might surprise your league mates about Brian Anderson the person? Oh geez, that’s a tough one. I have always considered myself a pretty plain, easy to please kind of person. I am always complaining about the Pirates and the politicians on facebook, but the reality is that I watch very little baseball and very little news, if any. I actually don’t watch much tv in general because I am usually on the go doing something other than sitting home in front of the tv. Speaking of politicians, my 2 favorite modern day presidents are old man George Bush (I actually watched a biography on him) and Bill Clinton. What I love about these 2 guys is that they fought a very spirited campaign against one another when I was a kid, but at times, they insulted one another. Clinton ended up winning the election by a landslide and I remember how much I disliked Clinton after he beat Bush. As the years went on, I got to like Clinton and later liked him even more when him and Bush formed a close friendship with one another. Two guys that competed hard against one another became close friends before Bush passed away. Something tells me that we aren’t going to see that happen with these current politicians.
Cody Haag (Blue)
1. You went from not even going to play in the league to contributing 4 goals last night. What made you decide to play and how nice was it to play a large part in last night’s win? I didn't plan on playing and I was actually thinking about taking a break. I have a job change coming up in the near future and I don't know how much longer I'll be able to play hockey. So I decided to play! It's always nice to score and feels good to help get the win. I really just want to have fun while I'm playing and enjoy playing on my team!
2. It’s no secret that Zach is one of the league’s most dominant players. What have you observed from him as an opponent and getting to play on his team last night? Zach is one of the top players in the league. He can do it all and is great to have on your team. When he wants to score there is not a lot of people that can stop him!
3. Do you like the draft leagues better than the SRHL and XHL leagues? As long as I like the team I am on I really don't have a preference for draft league or xhl. I am just here to have a good time and play hockey.
4. What can you say about the teams overall play last night? Team played great we were really fast for the first two periods and Zach and jaron played very well. I know Zach gets a lot of credit in this league(well deserved) but jaron has played really well and I think is becoming one of the top players as well!
5. What was your impression of the opposition and Tony in net? Orange has a good team with a lot of good players! Tony has improved a lot in net and if he continues to play goalie will continue to improve
Troy Gaydosh (Black)
1. 9-8 overtime loss last night. What can you say about the overall team effort in the loss? Tough loss, still a good effort. I'm still adjusting back to playing in Reynoldsville .
2. You ended up playing a 2nd game last night. How are you feeling today following the overtime game and the fill in game? There's always something to learn when you play with someone else/another team. Definitely worn out, but good shape for an ice tournament this weekend.
3. Your regular team came back at the end only to lose in overtime. Do you consider it a moral victory or a disappointing loss? . Still early in the season, so we're still feeling things out. Laken would've helped for sure. Thought we were rolling up 2-0 to start, then had a lot of defense breakdowns before we adjusted to Rossi and Calvert.
4. Whats it like playing alongside Noah, who is one of the league’s youngest, most most dominant players? When I played with him last year, we benefited off each other a lot, so I know we can put up a lot of points. I'm impressed with how well Braxton and him played the last 2 games, but I shouldn't be that surprised by how much those 2 go to Brockway and practice.
5. Do you like the draft leagues better than the SRHL and XHL leagues? Draft League is always a fun mixup, and the teams are pretty well balanced, so yeah. No matter what these, leagues have taught me to just enjoy playing.
Peach (Vegas Gold)
1. 9-8 overtime win last night. What can you say about the overall team effort in the win? I think it was another solid effort by the team. We jumped out to a big lead, let it slip, but finished the job in OT. It wasn’t pretty but we pulled it off.
2. Team Green would not go away in this game despite being down 5-0 to start the game. What do you think went wrong for you guys in their rally? I think my penalty to start the second period started the slide when they netted the PPG. We made mistakes and they capitalized. All I wanted was to buy a bounce, but I was no match for Braxton selling tripping calls.
3. You did not play much, if at all, throughout the summer. Are you glad to be back now? The day before the Randy I sustained a minor injury in a mud run but proceeded to play the next day, and it ended up costing me my summer. I was still injured when my July 4th comeback flopped, but I’m finally able to skate again, and for that I am grateful!
4. You contributed a couple goals in this game. How do you think you will be able to fit in with this team throughout the season? We’re pretty well rounded, so I may get to play up for a change. I know Bob didn’t pick me up because of my scoring touch, but hopefully I can keep rewarding him with some bonuses now and then. I don’t get winded as easily as I used to either, and I hope to take advantage of that with these short benches.
5. You reffed that first game that went into overtime as well. What was your observation from those 2 teams? Both of those teams were fast and dangerous, and both teams know how to quickly erase a deficit. They came out slugging and exchanged chances all night long. The problem won’t be keeping up with them, but trying to do it for 3 periods.
