Orange 6 Yellow 5 Shootout
(Orange – Lingenfelter, Waddell, Matchock, Stamler, Reed, Roush) Missing Zac Gray
(Yellow – McKinley, Larry, Rossi, Deloia, Terwilliger, Miller, McKinley B) Missing Benanti
Did not get to watch too much of this game unfortunately, but what better way to start off a draft league than going to a shootout. Not just a shootout, but deep into a shootout. We expected a good game considering the goalies and the rosters, but this was even better than expected. It took about 10 minutes before we got our first goal of the fall league session. Orange would go up 3-0 by the end of the first period with Alex Waddell scoring on a nice bounce off the wall. Waddell would score the game winning goal in the shootout. Yellow battled back to draw within 3-2 late in the 2nd period (Brice Miller scored one of them) but Jason Stamler scored late in the 2nd period to put orange up 4-2. Braxton McKinley would score early in the 3rd period for yellow. They would eventually tie the game at 5 at the end of regulation. Neither team scored in overtime despite some good chances on both sides. Both goalies did their thing in the shootout before Alex Waddell scored in the shootout. Fred Terwilliger was on the floor last night but may have been caught off guard without his usual teammates on the floor. There was an Anderson present, but he was in a ref shirt. Orange was playing without Zac Gray but he is expected to be there from this point forward. Gray was a big part of a Randy Carlson winning team a few years back. Rob Reed was on that team as well. Tony Benanti was missing for team yellow (trip to Colorado) but he said he will be there on a regular basis starting next week.
Blue 6 Red 2
(Red – Sutter, Kline N, Gaydosh, Peach, Lyons, Dodd L filled in for Wehner) Missing Wehner, Pompeii
(Blue – Snyder, Cody, Amick, Waltman, Schuckers A, Stitt, Haag)
Sky blue had everyone present last night and it looked like they had played together several times before. They played a very solid game defensively and when red did get chances, Chris Snyder was able to make his fair share of good saves. It was probably his best game as a goalie. It’s a position where we are in need of help. Kaden Coulter has improved a lot but was not able to play in this league due to a job change. Cody Haag scored the first goal of the game for Blue. They would go up 4-0 late in the 2nd period thanks to a couple goals from Cody Schuckers. One of his goals came on a nice finish after Henry Sutter stopped an initial shot from Jerred Amick. Noah Kline finally got team red on the scoreboard to close the gap to 4-1 but they never really threatened to get any closer. They were playing without Jeff Wehner and Steve Pompeii. Pompeii will not be available until the 2nd part of the season. Laken Dodd filled in for Jeff. Jake Kline or Brandon Reiter will take Cody’s spot on week’s where he is not available. He will not be there the next 2 weeks.
Gray 7 Black 5
(Black – Matchock J, Calvert, Dodd, Bassett, Conforto,Amick fill in), Missing Clontz, Pompeii P
(Gray – Dodd, Anderson, Smith, Schuckers, Hetrick, Anderson) Missing Bembenic
Zach Smith scored 2 late 3rd period goals to give team Gray a hard fought 7-5 win over team black last night. Gray went up 3-0 late in the first period before team Black got on the board. Tony Dodd played a solid game for team Gray but he may not be talking to Laken after Laken scored late in the first period off a nice rebound from a Corey Bassett shot that was initially saved until it hit Laken’s stick in front of the net. Andy helped his team tie the game at 5 midway thru the 3rd period. Bob Anderson was quiet from a scoring standpoint but set Cory and Zach up for 3rd period goals. Cory and Brian Anderson scored first period goals for gray while Corey Bassett provided a lift for black when he got to the rink by assisting on a goal from Laken and scoring a goal of his own in the 2nd period to help keep the game close throughout. Both goalies (Mathock and Dodd) did a good job for their respective teams. It was a fast paced game that could have gone either way. Josh Clontz will not be available for black until the Brockway draft league is over and Phil Pompeii wont be available until the first week of November. Corey Bassett is only available every other week. They will need some fill ins throughout the regular season. Team Gray is expected to have Trent next week.
Joe Roush --- Orange
1. 6-5 shootout win last night. What can you say about the overall team effort in the win? Team effort was good. I think we played pretty well as a group considering it was our first game together. Clint played well behind us and kept us in it despite our offensive pressure falling flat in the 2nd period.
2. You guys had a 3 goal lead after the 1st period but they battled back to eventually send it to overtime and a shootout. How would you describe the game overall? I feel we controlled the first period posession wise but definitely felt the momentum shift in the second period. 3rd was pretty even.. both goalies faced quite a few shots so kudos to both of them for keeping their respective teams in it and forcing the overtime play
3. Do you like the 3 on 3 overtime format for 3 minutes or would you rather extend it some to try to eliminate the shootout? . I'd rather just play sudden death overtime. Or at the very least extend it to 5 minutes instead. Maybe something to look at going forward?
4. What kind of expectations do you have for this team going forward? . I think we have a solid lineup without any kind of weakness that stands out. We were a little slow last night and played too conservatively at times but from what I was told, the individual that was missing from our lineup last night will help with our speed issue.
5. We weren’t able to put much hockey together in Reynoldsville this summer. How did you feel following last nights game? Tired. Definitely tired.
Steve Hetrick (Gray)
1. 7-5 win last night. What can you say about the overall team effort? Team effort was there the entire game. We actually had to all work together to pull off the victory.
2. The game was tight the whole way. What do you think made the difference in the end? I think just our constant pressure in their zone and then getting up a goal at the end and playing a bit more defensively to take the heat off of Tony
3. It was a fast paced game. Were you happy with the way you played? Holy fiddlesticks was it fast... We all were flying all over the place trying to get into better positions and make plays against each other. Overall I was happy with my play, but did make a couple mistakes I will need to correct in the future.
4. What was your overall take on Dodd in net last night? The Dodd Father did a fantastic job in net and definitely kept us in the game. Making some really amazing saves and showing off his acrobatics as well.
5. What kind of expectations do you have for this team going forward? We have a lot of awesome talent on this team and will definitely be a top competitor for the rest of the league. Looking forward to the rest of the season and seeing how much stronger we become as the league goes on.
Cody Schuckers (Sky Blue)
1.6-2 win last night. What can you say about the overall team effort in the win? Everyone on the team came to play I thought. We did a good job of cycling and moving the ball around and did well defensively. Our goalie did a good job making the saves he needed to make also.
2.How do you think you guys were able to limit them to 2 goals? Like I said think we did well defensively and our goalie bailed us out a couple times.
3. What kind of expectations do you have for this team after last nights game? Feel like we can compete with any team just need to tighten up a couple things and I’d be happier
4.Your biggest question will be with your goalie considering he hasn't been able to play on a steady basis for a while. How do you think he did last night? He did great in my opinion made some good saves and can only see him getting better
5. XHL and SRHL were very competitive seasons. Is it a nice change getting to play in a draft league for these next couple of months? For sure I like getting to play with players I don’t usually get to mixed up with
Andy Calvert (Black)
1. 7-5 loss to gray last night. What can you say about the overall team effort? The overall team effort was great everyone skated hard and did what we needed just not everyone was at 100 percent last night!
2. You have never been on the same team as corey bassett before and maybe not amick either. How do you think they fit in with yourself, Laken and tony last night? They fit in great, I know what Amick is going to do after playing against him for so long and a couple years on the Knights together! But Corey like the rest of the team is fast, and has a great shot I think we’ll all mesh together well!
3. The game was tight the whole way. What do you think went wrong at the end? I think just some unlucky bounces, or missed opportunities could’ve went either way though!
4. You were a part of 2 championship losses (XHL and SRHL) this year. Does that give you more determination to try to get back on top in these future leagues coming up? Absolutely i hate loosing and back to back is even worse. I want to win more than ever!
5. Do you want to bring the knights back for another xhl season or is it too early to tell? I definitely want to bring the knights back, just might see some new faces
Brice Miller (Yellow)
1. 6-5 shootout loss last night. What can you say about the overall team effort? We played well late in the game, just couldnt finish some chances we had
2. You guys were down 3-0 early but battled back to tie it. What do you think you guys did better as the game went on? Getting numbers down low helped us get some more chances and just being able to capitalize on the ones we had early in the 3rd
3. Do you like playing draft leagues better than the xhl where you have to put a team together? . Im indifferent, its always fun playing with different teams.
4. What kind of expectations do you have for your team going forward? I think we’ll put some wins together, just have to find the net.
5. Will you be back with the walkers in January or is it still too early to look ahead? So far thats the plan.
Peach (Red)
1. 6-2 loss to team blue last night. What can you say about the overall team effort? We played on our heels for most of the first half, but nobody gave up and we ground it out til the end. The effort was great, just not the results.
2. They got ahead by 4 at one point and never looked back. Did you think you guys were able to generate enough scoring chances to try to get back into the game? We just couldn’t get enough chances all night. They backchecked hard and played pretty solid defense. We just couldn’t get anything going.
3. We did not see you in Brockway too much throughout the srhl season. Were you glad to be back on the floor in Reynoldsville last night? . It’s always great to be back out there. I don’t like missing and hope to do that less. I also can’t beat the thought of reffing all of those games for nothing this past year. I won’t be there next week but hopefully it’s the last one I miss.
4. Mayhem made a nice run back in the spring. How would you describe your teams season and will you try to bring them back for another season starting in January? There was quite a bit of interest in possibly making another run. As a matter of fact I wore my Mayhem shirt to the gym this morning.
5. Like myself, you have become a pretty disenchanted voter over recent years. Without going into any detail, do you want to make a prediction on who will win the upcoming election? For the first time in my adult life I don’t even want to vote, that’s where I’m at. I think Pepsi is going to prevail over Coke this year. I just don’t see the enthusiasm for Coke that I saw in 2016 & 2020. A lot of noise, but that’s about it.
