PLAYOFF PREVIEW
It just wouldn’t be the playoffs if the Rogue and Colonials didn’t play each other. Once again, the two original XHL teams will battle in a playoff series. The Rogue has got the better of the Colonials in the last two, which just happened to be the Finals.
The Rogue is the two-time defending champions, and they are playing their best hockey late in the season, as evidenced by their 5-3 defeat of the Maniax last Monday. They’re defense and goaltending is again top notch, as they allowed the least number of goals of any team this season. Adam McKinley kept the Vezina Award in the Rogue family, claiming the title for the third time. Despite the accolade, Rob Keith is expected to play in this series, which isn’t any better if you are a Colonials fan.
The Colonials in the meantime are just now starting to get healthy, after a couple of July injuries. Captain Bob Anderson played in the final week of the regular season as a tune up for the playoffs, after going under the knife for surgery in early July. John Hrusth too suffered a nose injury before a game, but appears to be just fine now.
This is a series that couldn’t be a much better match-up. They both play similar styles, and usually play close games. Their two regular season match-ups resulted in an 8-5 win for the Colonials and an 8-7 shootout victory for the Rogue. If the Colonials can find a way to beat the Rogue in this series, it will be the first time in XHL history that the Rogue won’t make the Finals. In the meantime, the Colonials are hoping to get back to the Finals for the third straight year, despite finishing second in the prior two series.
One thing looks clear; this is bound to be a great series!
