OFFENSE:

The Venom scored the least amount of goals of any team last year.  With the departure of Ryan Johnson, it is hard to believe that number will increase drastically this year.  But the Venom will be helped by Jamie Calhoun, who adds a scoring presence to the backline.  Aside from that, the Venom needs somebody to step up.  Eric Butters has shown flashes of his ability in the past.  They may need him to be the guy who brings an offensive presence to the lineup.  Fortunately though, Luke Drayer brings his shot with him; one that scored him 29 goals last year.

DEFENSE:

The Venom struggled to find itself last year, which is kind of expected for a rookie team.  But they will be hoping to build on their experience from last year to play a more stingy style.  They have to get better with their position play, and everybody needs to hustle in the defensive end if they hope to improve their numbers this year.  Calhoun, coming over from the Sharks, will help solidify their defensive corp, but their focus will have to be on team defense if they are expecting to add some tallies to the win column this season.

GOALTENDING:

Paul Luchynsky is a rookie goalie in the league, but it is hardly new to the game of hockey.  Luchynsky has an unconventional style, one that is reminiscent of a Dominik Hasek in the NHL, but is able to make acrobatic and athletic saves as well.  He will be tested this year, but he has the demeanor to handle the heavy workload.  He’ll be a major help for the Venom this year.

WHERE WILL THEY FINISH?

It will take more than two seasons for the Venom to find themselves totally in the XHL, but their roster appears to be more balanced this season.  If they can get steady goaltending a committed defensive effort from their entire team, they could be a competitive team to play against.  They have some talent to go along with some heart, and should be a fun team to watch come together in 2008.
