OFFENSE:
Derek Miksich leads a
talented group of young players who can light the lamp. Miksich finished fourth in the league in
scoring last year with 74 points, and third in goal scoring with 55. He is only going to get better with each
passing season, and is already becoming one of the league’s premier
talents. He’s not alone though, and
this year’s team should have a more balanced scoring attack with the return of
Austin Boyd and the arrival of Ryan Johnson from the Venom. Miksich, Boyd, and Johnson showed what they
can do together in last year’s ironman fall ironman tournament, in which they
finished second despite dominating against veteran players at times. They should be a fun team to watch this year
with those three on the court.
DEFENSE:
The Legion, last year’s name
for this year’s Revolution team, gave up the third most goals of any team last
year. That is a troubling figure if
they hope to make their first ever postseason appearance. They will need to play with as much urgency
in the defensive end as they do in the offensive end, and will have to focus on
a more stingy style of play if they plan to be around in August.
GOALTENDING:
The “Kid” is back! After missing last year due to knee surgery,
Clay Halpin has returned to man the Revolution’s pipes. Halpin became a fan favorite three years
ago, when he entertained and dazzled fans with his athleticism in the Tyrants’
net. At 6’1”, Halpin has plenty of size
to get the job done, and is quick with his reflexes. But he’ll need to regain his angles and shake off the rust early,
to keep the Revolution in the tough games.
OUTLOOK:
The Pittsburgh Penguins came
up with a marketing campaign a few years back inviting fans to “Experience the
Evolution” of its young and coming team.
In a lot of ways, the league is watching the Revolution’s
evolution. This is the franchise’s
third year in the XHL, and they are already drawing the eyes of players across
the league. With a cast of young and
talented players, it is only a matter of time until they can put it all
together. And while the XHL is bound to
experience the closest year in terms of parity thus far, they will be a
difficult team to beat and could surprise even the top teams this year. That said, their evolution may take another
year, or maybe two, but if they stick together, they are bound to be among the
top teams for many years.
